Ingredients to Make Oatmeal Cookies

To make oatmeal cookies, there are a few essential ingredients that you will need. These include:

  • All purpose flour
  • Old fashioned oats
  • Vanilla extract
  • Cinnamon
  • Pinch of salt
  • Eggs
  • Butter
  • Baking soda
  • Sugar

These are pretty much all things that you probably have handy in your kitchen or pantry ready to go. However, most people believe that cookies are best made with brown sugar.

Whilst this may be down to personal preference, you do not actually require brown sugar to make your oatmeal cookies taste good. You can use white sugar, and they will turn out just fine, and just as delicious.

White Sugar or Brown Sugar in Cookies?

For the purpose of this recipe, we have omitted the brown sugar. This results in delicious, tasty, and oaty cookies that are incredibly sweet, soft and a little chewy for a scrumptious bite. This is because we have used white sugar instead of brown, which gives that extra fluffiness, and helps them to rise, unlike brown sugar! However, these cookies look much lighter in color, and even taste lighter than ones made with brown sugar. This is largely due to the fact that brown sugar has more molasses, which is where it gets its richer flavor, and darker coloring.

With white sugar, you will have a more softer flavor, but you can add in chips for a little more taste and sweetness, which is what we prefer!

Optional Ingredients for Oatmeal Cookies

The good thing about making your own baked goods is that you can throw in whatever mix-ins that you prefer.

With this recipe for oatmeal cookies, you can add your own flavorings to suit your desires such as raisins, chocolate chips, white chocolate, dark chocolate, walnuts, toasted pecans, or even pretzel pieces. The choice is entirely yours, or you could experiment with a few different mix-ins, and make a few batches of oatmeal cookies to find your favorite!

The only thing you have to remember is that whichever you choose to use, just use one cup of mix-ins for this recipe.

How to Make Oatmeal Cookie Dough

It is actually really simple to make an oatmeal cookie dough. All you need is to combine all of the dry ingredients in one mixing bowl, and mix the butter and sugar in another bowl.

That being said, you will need to keep in mind that you want a mixture that is light, fluffy and airy, with a light yellow color. This will give you the perfect oatmeal cookies, so make sure that you are mixing your ingredients super thoroughly, and only mix in the eggs one by one for a fluffy dough mixture. To create the perfect oatmeal cookie dough, you will then need to combine the wet and dry ingredients in the same bowl, mixing until completely combined, and there is no dry flour left lying around.Once you have a perfectly formed dough, you can mix in the optional ingredients such as raisins or chocolate chips. Combine these by folding them into your dough gently.

With this done, you will have the best cookie dough, ready to be formed into balls and baked into cookies! If you prefer more chewy cookies rather than crispy, then we recommend that you chill your cookie dough in the freezer for around 8-10 minutes before you bake them, as this will help them become firm and will create thicker feeling cookies when you bite into them later!

Storing Homemade Cookies

If you want to enjoy your oatmeal cookies for longer, then you will need to know exactly how to store them.

We recommend using an airtight container to help them last longer. Additionally, you may want to freeze the cookies in a container such as this, which will keep them fresher for up to 3 months!
